What is Fort McPherson?

Fort McPherson became the first permanent Army installation in the southeast in 1889.  It was headquarters for the U.S. Army Forces Command, the U.S. Army Reserve Command, the U.S. Army Central Command and the U.S. Army Installation Management Command, Southeast Region.   The fort was closed September 15, 2011, as a result of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Act
Where is Fort McPherson?
The 488 acre property is located in the 12th District of the City of Atlanta, Georgia.   It is approximately four miles south of downtown and four miles north of Hartsfield Jackson International Airport.
What is the McPherson Implementing Local Redevelopment Authority?
MILRA is the authority established by the State and recognized by the Secretary of Defense as the entity responsible for developing and implementing the approved redevelopment plans but is not a development company.    (For additional information on the purpose of the MILRA and structure of the Board of Directors, please refer to the History/Bylaws section of this site.)
What are the Redevelopment Plans?
The vision of the master plan is to create a thriving community where people can live, work, learn and play. Being guided by the current realities of the market, these plans include a Science and Technology Park, mixed income housing, retail and green space.   (The 2010 Research Master plan is available for review and can be found in the Planning section of the website.)
What will happen to the historic homes and buildings?
There are 40 buildings on the site that are listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.   These buildings, along with the parade ground, will be protected and will continue to honor the history of the site.   They may become available for sale or lease to individuals or businesses as the requirements for reuse are finalized by the Army.
Who owns the property now that base is closed?
While the military operations that were at Fort McPherson have been relocated, the Army continues to own the property and is providing the necessary maintenance and security services through a caretaker agreement until the property is transferred and those responsibilities go to the new owner.
